The CIPP/US Certification
The Certified Information Privacy Professional United States (CIPP/US) provides a valuable experience for privacy experts working in the American private sector. This Certification is regarded as the international benchmark for privacy specialists in the U.S. private sector. The CIPP/US Exam
The CIPP/US Exam is a computer-based multiple-choice test consisting of 90 questions. Exam takers are given 2.5 hours (150 minutes) to complete the exam. Additionally, a score of 300 out of 500 is needed to pass the CIPP/US Exam. The CIPP/US Exam encompasses the important aspects of Privacy in the US, and the Structure for the CIPP/US Body of Knowledge is divided into five parts.
The first part deals with the introduction to the US Privacy Environment and includes the Structure of US Law, Enforcement of US Privacy and Securities Law, and Information Management from the US Perspective. The second part deals with the Limits on Private-sector Collection and Use of Data in Cross-Sector Regulations and particular industries including healthcare, finance, education, and marketing. The third part deals with the Government and Court Access to Private-sector Information and delves upon the aspects of Privacy in Law Enforcement, National Security, and Civil Litigation. The fourth part dives into the aspect of Workplace Privacy before, during, and after employment. Finally, the fifth and final part deals with the State Privacy and Breach Notification Laws.
Changes in the CIPP/US Exam
Privacy is an ever-evolving field that requires individuals to be up to date with the latest changes. Resultingly, new developments in the field of Privacy in the US have brought about a change in the CIPP/US Examination. From October 2nd, 2023, onwards, exam takers will face changes that have been made to the syllabus.
- Firstly, with respect to the first part regarding the introduction to the US Privacy Environment, under Part B dealing with Enforcement of US Privacy and Securities Law, the State Enforcement has been expanded to include the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA). In the same part, with respect to Part C dealing with Information Management from a US Perspective, under International Data Transfers, the new EU-US Data Privacy Framework has been introduced.
- Secondly, with respect to the second part regarding the Limits on Private-sector Collection and use of Data, under Part B dealing with the Healthcare Industry, the Use of Online Tracking Technologies by HIPAA Covered Entities and Business Associates has been added to the syllabus.
- Finally, with respect to the fifth part regarding State Privacy Laws, a few additions have been made. Part A regarding Federal vs. State Authority now includes the CCPA. In Part B, two new topics have been introduced, Facial recognition use restrictions and Biometric Information Privacy Regulations which includes the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) (2008). In addition to these new topics in Part B, the Connecticut Data Privacy Act (CTDPA) (2022), Utah Consumer Privacy Act (UCPA) (2022) and the California Age-appropriate design code act (A.B. 2273) (2022) have been included under the recent developments.
Apart from these changes, the new syllabus remains the same. Thus, from 2nd October 2023, exam takers must be aware of the new topics that have been introduced.
